Walk4Life

Walking the questions
W4Life seeks to enhance dialogue around the relationship between conservation and mental health issues, so that more holistic approaches to these crises can enter our bloodstream.

The team, led by Nick Holme, will be the first to complete a continuous walk around Lake Kariba, the largest man made lake in the world. The journey will cover 2,200 kilometres over 3 months through challenging terrain, past dangerous animals and around 200 billion tons of water.

Throughout the journey, the team will talk to communities to explore local solutions, and will be joined by conservation and thought leaders as they walk the questions. A documentary will be made of their journey and there will be daily updates on social media channels to further grow the conversation. Starting June 6th, borders will be crossed: between Zimbabwe and Zambia; water and land; mental health and conservation. Challenges will be met. Questions embodied.

Walk4L will be raising funds to:
  • Give the walk and future challenges the best opportunity to grow this conservation conversation.
  • Engage with authorities and leading experts in order to challenge the status quo and adopt fresh approaches to the symbiotic relationship between conservation and mental health.
  • Create a global movement towards exploring more holistic approaches to these crises.
  • Support people in moving beyond rhetoric to understanding and action.
  • Fund selected projects among local communities and elsewhere that pilot ideas generated from the walk and offer innovative approaches to conservation and mental health.
  • Build an online platform to house the conversation, and a physical Knowledge and Education Centre to help bring the questions to life.

To encourage ongoing dialogue, move the questions into being, and help sustain the Knowledge and Education Centre, the walk will be followed, over the next five years, by two further endurance events:

Waves4Life
This second endurance feat will involve sailing a traditional dhow from Oman to the Save River in Mozambique, a journey of 6,800 kilometres along the ancient trading route connecting Africa with the Omani Empire.

Wind4Life
This will involve flying a hot air balloon from the Mozambique coast, across Africa to the Namibian desert, a distance of 2,200 kilometres!

Questing is finding a path of joy, curiosity and connectedness amidst crisis, being honest about what we don't know, and embodying what we do. Come quest with us!
